The story

Gwangjang opened in 1905 and never really closed. Under one long roof: silk, hanbok and vintage racks on the floor above, and downstairs the food alley that made it world-famous — mung-bean pancakes fried in cauldrons, gimbap so addictive they call it “narcotic”, raw beef tartare served since your grandparents’ time. Sit on a plastic stool, point, eat. That’s the whole protocol.

A half-day on foot

  1. 1
    16:00Vintage floor first
The vintage floor closes at 7pm and is shut on Sundays, and the tartare shop is closed on Mondays — so this route works Tuesday to Saturday.

    17:00Bindaetteok at Sunhui-ne
Mung beans ground in a stone mill and fried to order — with a bottle of makgeolli.
  3. 3
    18:00Mini gimbap
A roll is ₩4,000 — dip it in the mustard-soy sauce. Monyeo Gimbap’s Dongho-ro stall stays open later than the one in the covered alley.
  4. 4
    18:45Yukhoe alley
Beef tartare with egg yolk and shredded pear, ₩23,000 at the sisters’ shop that opened in 1974.
